The name Kenny Mac (Macguyver) has been buzzing in North Carolina for a long while now. I've seen his freestyle videos on YouTube and caught him live in a battle against Seven da Pantha held at City Live Studios not too long ago. I was impressed! Kenny did his homework on his opponent and brought out the big bars, props and all. I booked him on my next show, tonight at Shakedown Street in Raleigh!
I needed North Carolina music fans to know more about Mr. Macguyver so I interviewed him and here is what I found out:
TaraMarie: How long have you been involved in the Hip Hop scene?
Kenny: For about 10 years now. I started freestyling and battling when I was 16. When Kaze used to have an Open Mic at the Local 506, I was there every week, in every battle and freestyling to every beat! I ended up getting a deal with an Independent label out of D.C. that led me to almost getting a writing deal with Ruff Ryders. The label I was with had the money to back me, but they were making bad business decisions. I got frustrated seeing how the real industry was and stopped rapping for about 4 years. I'm back now...with a vengeance!!
TaraMarie: Who would you name as your inspirations, music-wise?
Kenny: Music-wise the only ones I look up to are Big L and DMX, but what drives me is when I see any local/underground artist going hard to make it. Giving it their all, investing their own money, their time and having the courage to rap or sing whenever they can and in front of whoever is there.
TaraMarie: Where do you hope your talent leads you?
Kenny: Honestly, I hope my talent leads me to a writing deal. I would love to write rhymes for someone else. I have a deep, intellectual mind, however some of the things I think of, I can't do...Like sing! LOL
TaraMarie: What projects do you have in the works right now? When do you expect to release them?
Kenny: I'm putting together a Mixtape called "Crack With Mac" and I'm also working on my album titled "Signed, The Unsigned". When I feel comfortable with every SONG, not just verses, but SONGS, then I'll release it. I'm still working on QUALITY music.
TaraMarie: You recently released your song "Stupid". What was the drive behind that?
Kenny: The song "Stupid" is actually one of my poems! I write slam poetry more then rap. I felt the need to transfer this into rap form and put it on a beat. Hip Hop was created to teach lessons. I love to teach as well as learn. My favorite responses are when someone tells me that one of my songs touched them, rather then hearing that I spit a hot verse. As far as "Stupid" goes, some things just needed to be said! People nowadays have been misdirected for so long that we started to think that the wrong things are cool.
TaraMarie: Have you shot any videos yet? Are you planning to?
Kenny: I don't have any real videos shot yet, but I am confident with my first 3 singles so I'm ready ASAP! I've been looking around, trying to find someone that can give me the visuals that I have in mind. So to any Videographers, if you can meet the treatment/concept of the songs I have ready, Holla at me!! Until then, I am always dropping freestyles and doing battles. Check out my YouTube page...
