Maliq "Millie" Vaughn is quickly becoming a recognizable name among artists and producers alike. Artists see him as the beat behind their next banger, producers see him as serious competition in the Beat Battles and on the streets. With a versatile collection of productions in his catalogue and a new project out, he's moving fast up the ladder to success! Join me as I found out about who "Millie" is...
TaraMarie: How did you get started in music production? Is there a family history in music?
Millie: My talent is credited to my late father, Fred Duane Graves. He had an extraordinary voice and would sing often before he passed
away. Though I didn't have much of a voice for music, I had a talent for making it, which inspired me to become more involved in it. At first it was just a hobby of mine that I started in 2006 by fooling around with different music programs. However, I began gaining interest in the program, Fruity Loops, and launched the task of mastering my newly acquired skills from there. My music career took off!
TaraMarie: How do you describe your production style and sound?
Millie: I take pride in the fact that I'm extremely versatile when it comes to my music production. I don't stick with a specific genre nor do I like using the same percussion or instruments for every beat, so that allows me to appreciate all types of music. Having this ability, I like switching my sound up so I can show off my creativity and appeal to any type of audience.
TaraMarie: Who or what inspires you to keep going in a sometimes frustrating industry?
Millie: My drive and inspiration comes from my mother. Observing the life that she has lived has motivated me to keep going until I reach the top. As most mothers, she has always had my best interest at heart and supported my goals, so I want to be able to take care of her as she has for me.
Tara Marie: You've participated in some major Beat Battles in North Carolina recently, How many have you won and which were they?
Millie: I have been in 8 Beat Battles total and I won my last 2. The 1st battle I won was November 2011 at The Black Flower in Raleigh, NC (808s & Heartbreaks). The most recent battle I won was in Wilmington, NC at The Soapbox in January of this year (Battlefield of Beats).
TaraMarie: You are part of the Lazrso Records label, a label created by another North Carolina artist, Lazurus. What is your history there and what can we expect from the label?
Millie: I was introduced to Lazurus back in 2007 by another great friend of mine, S. Gold, and eventually we all started hanging out together and have continued to make great music together throughout recent years. You can expect nothing less then epic music and professionalism from Lazrso Records.
TaraMarie: You put out "The Millie Tape" recently, a project entirely produced by you, and there has been great feedback from it! Who are some of the artists included on that project? When can we expect another project from you?
Millie: Yes, this was my first mixtape that I've released and it certainly won't be my last! My sole purpose for coming out with this project was to showcase NC artists presenting their own unique style and lyrics over my productions. SkyBlew, Lazurus, S.Gold, Tuscon, Free Agent Jasun, Azon Blaze, Sarah Kaboom, Marc Law, J Capri, Jones Andrews and Chris Millz to name a few of the NC artists that are featured on The Millie Tape. Shout out to everyone that played a part in the making of The Millie Tape. This mixtape is also dedicated to my father, Fred Duane Graves and best friend Byron Jerel Hudson whom passed a few years ago. I dedicated this project to them because they both had a major impact on my life and I worked extremely hard to make this mixtape a success in honor of them. I continue every day to take notes, improve myself, and look to release another mixtape in the near future. Probably sometime late Summer, early Fall of 2012.
