Esko...The Seed

Raised in New Jersey now residing in Los Angeles, CA, by way of Raleigh, NC, is not necessarily a "new" artist, but may be unknown to many, Esko Robinson.  The August 2012 release of his album, The Seed, metaphorically relates his life of chaos into a new life of growth. Even though he felt that the limitations of a small town like Raleigh wasn't a good fit for him, he lists production credits to his North Carolina A&T University classmate, Sean Lane (who's also credited for work with Eyezon and J Ross Parrelli). Production credit also goes out to Q-Smith, CAV3 and J-Kits.

The Seed is the first of 3 LP's that Esko is using as a musical documentary of his personal growth through a tumultuous decade of trials, events he experienced in North Carolina and the decision to move West. Influenced by MCs such as Andre 3000, Method Man, Eminem and Busta Rhymes, Esko's style is described as multi-dimensional and introspective. D.4.G....."Business B4 Pleasure"

On a Sunday night, months back, I walked into Jack Sprat in Chapel Hill, NC (Home of Sunday Night Sessions Open Mic with Bishop Omega) and waited for all the emcees to come out, hoping to catch some new talent. On that particular night, 2 acts signed up (I guess all the other emcees in the area already got signed or something, or forgot how important every opportunity to be seen or heard is). These two young hype guys stepped on the stage and didn't care that there were less than 10 people in the spot, they rocked anyway. D.4.G. (Destined 4 Greatness) caught my attention and I reached out.

D.4.G. is made up of Ye Ea$t (Okoye Gordon) and XO (Donyea Elliot), both hailing from the streets of Durham, NC, but in different household settings. Ea$t had both his mother and father in the home and XO was raised by his Aunt. Music was intertwined in both of their lives through different avenues. Ea$t was influenced by his mother and her exposing him to music even before birth. XO credits his Aunt who raised him and his Uncle Fadelle Roberts, who is a Producer and Emcee also from Durham.

Putting a description on D.4.G.'s "style" is complicated. Their creative metaphors and humor in their lyricism matched with catchy beats is hard to interpret. It's definitely not "backpacker" Hip Hop, but it does have a "swagg" twist to it. Listen for yourself by downloading their "Business Before Pleasure" Mixtape on datpiff.com. D.4.G. continues to work by the motto "The grind never stops" as they are already building the next in a series of mixtapes.

Edgar Allen Floe & J Wheels..."Floetry in Motion"

New Album released by Edgar Allen Floe, joined with Producer J Wheels, has been a year in the making. Floe's 1st release on the scene was in 2005 and he's put out 4 other projects before "Floetry In Motion". A member of 9th Wonder's The Justus League, Floe has been described as an emcee that "raps from a pulpit of authority that not many emcees rival", Edgar Allen Floe produces and creates Hip Hop on a higher level.

Kera Jo...North Carolina's "Gem"

Seeming to come out overnight, Kera Jo is using her voice in many ways to introduce herself. She's an established singer, rapper, actress, writer & videographer. Her credits include 2 seasons of hosting the Raleigh, NC TV show "Cultural Xpressions", performing at the World Famous Apollo Theatre, appeared on an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and the feature film "Shutterbug", published a rapper style poetry book, is a guest hostess for Big Tyme TV (based out of Raleigh, NC) and has had her music played on numerous online radio stations. Basically, she does it all!!

Kera Jo doesn't stay in one lane when it comes to the music. Although her heart beats Hip Hop and she's been rapping since she was 12, she branches out into R&B, Neo-Soul, DubStep and Spoken Word. We'll be able to hear her many sides when her newest album is completed, titled "The Gem".

Danielle BlaiQ...Hip Hop Soul From Durham

Training in Boston, Massachusetts as an Audio Engineer, Danielle BlaiQ quickly realized that she had more to offer to the music scene around her. Already a skilled songwriter, she took the step on stage and proved that she has what it takes to draw the audience in. She has the voice, the confidence and the energy that many performers strive to achieve. Danielle was most recently featured on a song with AnnMarie Fox, a local pop artist from Durham, NC. The song, "Internet BreakUp", has been played on K97.5's weekly 919Radio program.

Miss BlaiQ is working on her newest project expected to release this Summer 2012.

"Let's Be Honest"...Kam Moye/Supastition

Don't judge me for posting an older video! Hip Hop music is one of the genres that is still relevant years past it's release. I'll be honest, I heard of Supastition since I moved to North Carolina in the late 90's, but didn't really know much of his music. The first NC artists I heard while residing here were Brandon D and Tye Banks. Over the years, I did some research, but was still discovering artists when I was pulled into the local scene. Facebook was a wonderful tool!

DJ KStones...More Than Just a "Black Dress"

East Carolina University graduate, Kristen Stoneman, started out her career on the turntables at the college radio station but has landed "KStones" in some impressive positions within the music industry. As one of the only female DJ's in the Triangle area of North Carolina, KStones has proven to be an equal contender to her male counterparts. Her resume boasts work with G105.1 FM's Bob and the Showgram, General Manager/Hip Hop Director of WZMB 91.3 FM, National Coordinator for Island/Def Jam College Marketing Team, CEO of Stoneman Records and 2011 Carolina Music Awards DJ of the Year. She's been featured in DStripped Magazine and 2011 Best of Awards Raleigh Downtowner Magazine. DJ KStones is a favorite among NC's Underground artists because she spins their music whenever she's able to at the local clubs she works in.

Carolina Cuts...Relic Spinning 4 NC!

Carolina Cuts...An online Podcast hosted by Relic (aka RelicofRIP) on IllMuzikRadio.com is currently spinning more than 50 Hip Hop and R&B artists from across the Carolina's. Relic understood the frustration of "Underground" or "Independent" artists wanting to be heard without the avenues to expand their listening base, so he created the Podcast just for that. It's been in operation just over a year and it's growing consistently. Artists can submit their music, free and unedited (he believes "art is art and people shouldn't have to edit their free speech in order to be heard") to CarolinaHipHopRadio@gmail.com (mp3 format) and make sure it's QUALITY music! If your music isn't ready for airplay, you will receive feedback on what you may need to do to get it to that point (I like that! Artist development advice!).

New episodes are released about every 2 weeks so submit your music today!

Armed With Mics...It's Fallen Anghellz!!

Fallen Anghellz is undoubtedly one of the most electrifying new duos on the North Carolina Hip-Hop scene. Consisting of MC/Producer Apostle A.P. and MC/Vocalist Seven Da Pantha. The group released their debut, Lost Testaments Vol. 1: The Passion…The Truth on December 13, 2011. Spearheaded by the production of A.P., the album is an affirmation of the beautiful noise the East Coast has been experiencing over the last year as the Anghellz’ live performances brought down the house in numerous venues.

Jay White...The Takeover!!

Jay White has been grinding all over North Carolina and into other neighboring states for years. He has that street hard sound with addictive hooks in his music. With the upcoming release of his 3rd Mixtape, "Takeover", we are sure to hear more from this young NC artist in the future!

Come On Out To Shakedown Street!!

If you live anywhere within the Triangle area, you've probably heard about Shakedown Street!! Located directly across from the NC State campus at 2500 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, NC. It's owned by a husband and wife, affectionately known to the artists and fans that come through there as "Uncle John and Darlene". By the many photos on the walls within Shakedown Street, I knew there had to be a history behind Uncle John, I was right...

TaraMarie: How long have you owned Shakedown Street? Did you open it to be primarily as a music venue?

The Millie Vaughn Experience..."The Millie Tape"

Maliq "Millie" Vaughn is quickly becoming a recognizable name among artists and producers alike. Artists see him as the beat behind their next banger, producers see him as serious competition in the Beat Battles and on the streets. With a versatile collection of productions in his catalogue and a new project out, he's moving fast up the ladder to success! Join me as I found out about who "Millie" is...

TaraMarie: How did you get started in music production? Is there a family history in music?

Millie:  My talent is credited to my late father, Fred Duane Graves. He had an extraordinary voice and would sing often before he passed

From The Mouth Of Bishop Omega!

It's not easy filling the shoes of several men at once, but "BullCity's" Bishop Omega does just that! He acts, freestyles, hosts and keeps us laughing. He's REAL in the sense that he doesn't sugarcoat ANYTHING, but that's ok, because that's why he's among the favorites for many people in the North Carolina Hip Hop scene.  We'll let him explain himself even better in the interview I was able to get from him:

TaraMarie: How would you describe who "Bishop Omega" is?

Bishop:  I'm the respectable funny guy with a keen business mind. Damn! that sounds good huh?! Nah, I'm just a man with God given talent that is on his grind!

KAZE? 4Letters? Black Kennedy?

The beginning of 2012 may have confused some of the faithful fans of Chapel Hill, North Carolina's favorite, Kaze aka 4Letters, as he took on a different persona, "Black Kennedy". Questions are being asked like "No more Kaze?" "Who is Black Kennedy?" So let me explain and try to settle some of the confusion. "Kaze" will always be KAZE! Black Kennedy is the name he has chosen to Produce under (Yes, besides being a beast on the mic, he also is the sound behind it too). Anybody that knows Kevin "Kaze" Thomas knows that he's always been an extremely motivated artist. He's had his hands in Battles, Open Mics, TV shows, and just about every other aspect of Hip Hop. In 2011, he joined up with Pop singer/International Model, Liz Harlow, and her team in Miami. They've been putting together "JetSetMafia", a music project that combines Pop, Hip Hop and Dubstep. "Black Kennedy" has produced a majority of it. The project released their 1st video "Bass Cannon" and 1st track "Dance Floor" this month at www.JETSETMAFIAMUSIC.com. Every great artist knows how to keep his fans tuned in and how to grab new fans as the times change and that's what this year will prove to us.
